Hello All,

Our company is interested in purchasing Visual Studio 6.0 package for
developing various tools for its quality assurance department.
I need some clarification about certain issues:

1. the difference between VS 6.0 Professional Edition and VS 6.0
Enterprise Edition.
2. licenses - is the package per workstation ?
3. purchasing VS .NET gives license to use VS 6.0 ??

Thanks in Advance,
Roy Varum.

1. the difference between VS 6.0 Professional Edition and VS 6.0
Enterprise Edition.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/previous/vs6/features/default.aspx

Basically Enterprise Edition includes Visual SourceSafe, BackOffice
server and some other server database tools.

2. licenses - is the package per workstation ?
http://opentech.leafe.com/viewtopic.php?t=259 section 1.1

I believe that it is per development PC, in other words you can install
it on multiple workstations but only 1 can be used at a time for
development (essentially it is per designated development user). For
instance, I have VS6 Pro, I have installed it on a desktop PC and a
laptop PC for development and a third PC for testing, I can only use VS6
on one PC at a time.

3. purchasing VS .NET gives license to use VS 6.0 ??
http://www.microsoft.com/permission/copyrgt/cop-soft.htm#Downgrades

Again, I believe that buying newer versions of VS.NET grants you the
right to use previous versions (but you should confirm that first, my
VB.NET Learning Edition does not seem to have anything about it in the
EULA), or you can order it when buying an MSDN subscription.

Make sure you read the text for downgrading from VB.NET to VB6 very,
very carefully... you need special permission to do it and you have to
obtain the VB6 software on your own. Since it is not for sale new
anymore (and hasn't been for a while), you will probably be buying a
used copy. If you make sure to buy an entirely complete used package
(license, disks, EULA, etc.), then you won't need to downgrade from
VB.NET. The problem, of course, is finding a completely intact copy of
VB6 anymore. Good luck.

According to
<http://msdn.microsoft.com/vbasic/previous/downgrade.aspx> you can get
VB6 from Microsoft. Is that no longer true?

Well, I'm not positive; but I note the link you cited says you can
"request" the software media whereas the downgrade link says talks about
it this way...

Microsoft may still have some inventory remaining for the downgraded
product(s) you are requesting. Please call 1-800-426-9400 or your local
Microsoft sales office and specify that you are seeking a "downgrade of
product" rather than "Full Packaged Product". Microsoft does not always
maintain inventory on outdated product(s), so if you are expecting disks
and/or manuals, check with your Microsoft sales office before purchasing
the appropriate number of licenses of current software.
