Hi all

Is there such an app as a VB6 Project Viewer?
I'm think something like an exe file that can point to a .VBP file and open
it to display something like the VB6 IDE but purely as read only.
Something you could use like the VB6 IDE with project explorer and
properties window and the code/form design windows but nothing can be edited
in any way.

Anything around like this.

It might even be an interesting project to build.

Note that I've ever seen.
I'd just use the VB IDE and only read it :)

Of course, Why didn't I think of that? Maybe because VB6 is not installed on
the PC with the development files :-)
You can view MS Word, Powerpoint and Excel etc on PCs that don't have MS
Office installed as long as you have the right viewer.
I was hoping the same kind of thing existed for VB6 project files.

I would think creating an exe file from VB6 that could do this would not be
that hard for viewing code and project explorer and VBs intrinsic controls,
Usercontrols, and added components would have to be represented by some kind
of standard image.

If nothing turns up I might make one, then I could sell it and be rich
beyond my wildest dreams.

Thanks for the reply

Office is a mainstream program that people think is ubiquitous so expect
everyone to be able to read their files.

VB isn't and you don't often send VB projects to people other than VB
programmers :)

If you're really stuck then notepad works fine.
Ok, it can't display a form, but it gives you all the code, and the form
structure is fairly straight forward to understand.

Or even better Notepad++ that highlights tokens, and there are other editors
that do the same.
Anything here that fits?

Hah! I love Eclipse, and wish it had a VB plug-in (but it doesn't, and
I don't have the ambition to write one).

Yes, on Planet-Sourcecode (if you browse a bit
through the "latest additions") there was something
like that (seen last week or so).

But I think, it was not offering a "read only mode".
But since it comes "in source" there shold be
possiblities, to disable editing within the appropriate
controls.

How about PrettyCode.Print : http://submain.com/products/prettycode.print.aspx
You don't need VB to run it (although it can be used as an addon from within the
IDE) and you don't have to print to paper to see its output. It supports syntax
hilighting, etc. and works with all versions of VB up to VB6.
I've been using it for years.

Having now looked closely at the submain.com site, there doesn't actually appear
to be any way to download or order either the VB6/VBA or .NET version nowadays
despite both still being advertised there. :^(

Ah ok. I always forget to try the WayBackMachine. Pity you can't pay for or
register PrettyCode.Print nowadays. Luckily it only leaves a small registration
reminder in the bottom margin of the page.

Store your project/s in a Source Code Control System (VSS or other).
Allow people to check out projects with Read-Only prviledges.
